EARTH graduate elected president of the National Chamber of Pineapple Producers and Exporters
Christian Herrera Leon (’96, Costa Rica) was elected on July 3rd as the president of the board of directors for the National Chamber of Pineapple Producers and Exporters (CANAPEP in Spanish). Costa Rica is the number one exporter of fresh pineapple in the world and the chamber represents 80% of the hectares planted in the country.

The chamber’s objective is to encourage associates to work in adherence to environmental, labor, and social laws of the country as well as laws mandated by international organizations.
Christian works in the family business exporting fruits and vegetables. His brother Fabrizio Herrera (’95, Costa Rica), also an EARTH graduate, runs the company and coordinates the pineapple program. Pineapple makes up 85% of the company’s exports, and they buy the fruit from 58 small-scale farmers in the northern part of the country.
The pineapple sector directly employs 25,200 workers, and indirectly employs 108,000 people, generating approximately 800 million dollars annually.
