Antonio is from Beira, an urban port city in Mozambique. He will be the first member of his family to attend university. Though he grew up in the city, Antonio felt strongly that agriculture is the key to developing his country and after high school, he attended the Agricultural Institute of Chimoio to learn more about agriculture’s role in community development. He completed two internships while at the Institute: the first at a sugar cane processing plant and the second at a sustainable irrigation project financed by the World Bank. He says of the latter, “I believe it made a big impact on the community: we managed to pipe in water from a nearby mountain and now the village has clean water for the first time, thanks to this project.”

After hearing about the University through a visiting admissions officer at his school, Antonio says, “What really convinced me to come to EARTH was the mission and vision, plus the chance to live and connect with people from so many different cultures.”
