Although Yamikani grew up in a small city in Malawi, she was never far from agriculture. She often visited her grandparent’s farm, where they grew vegetables and maize that they ate or sold to relatives. Yamikani maintained good grades, especially in social studies and agriculture, her favorite subjects. After graduating from high school, Yamikani moved to northern Zambia and volunteered with International Citizenship Services, working with at-risk girls to encourage them to continue their education and educating them about the risks of teen pregnancy.

Yamikani found out about EARTH through an acquaintance. “I know that here at EARTH I’m really going to get the kind of education and experience I need to make a difference back home. When I was young, I thought I wanted to be a lawyer. As I grew up, I realized that I didn’t want to be someone who works for the benefit of only themselves. With agriculture, I believe I can help others in my community and my country.”
