Maxamed is from Erigavo in the northern province of Sanaag, Somaliland. He is especially interested in Somali and Somaliland politics and development, and wants to use agriculture to make a positive impact to help his nation become prosperous.
When his parents learned that he had been accepted and found a sponsor, Maxamed recalls “They were so happy when I got the scholarship. They knew that they needed someone to help them improve their life, and now that person is me.”
His goal for the future is to improve life as a whole in his community: fight against hunger, lack of education and violence by educating people in the classroom and also teaching sustainable farming techniques to rural producers. Maxamed also wants to own his own shop where he will sell his crops in addition to food, supplements and medicines for livestock. He is eager to learn how to take advantage of Somaliland’s dry dessert climate and to help producers develop inexpensive water catchment systems, similar to the one that he implemented on his own family’s farm.
