Maureen is from Kingali, the capital city of Rwanda. She chose to study at EARTH because she feels that she can make the most impact in her country by working in the agricultural sector, as over 80% of people in her country depend on the sector for their livelihoods. “In Rwanda, if you aren’t educated then you do agriculture. Every household has a cow because the government gives one to every family. I want to change my country through good agricultural practices.”
One way she hopes to help her community is by becoming an ethical entrepreneur. “My big brother is graduating soon from a university in Rwanda, and he too is studying agriculture. Our idea is that we will start a business together. There is a big market for hens and eggs, because right now Rwanda is importing them from our neighbor countries and they are so expensive. We want to create a sustainable chicken business, and sell them in the cities and in the villages.”
