Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program
Jacquiline Nyawira / Kenya

Class of 2016-2019

Scholar: Hugo Bladimir Guardado Torres Scholar: Jane Kapenda

Jacquiline is from a rural area in central Kenya and speaks Swahili, Kikuyu, Kamba, Luya, Luyo, English, and Spanish. During high school, she attended a rural boarding school and took agricultural classes. “All of my friends preferred computer science and there I was growing maize in the garden!” After graduating, Jacquiline worked actively in her community, sharing her agricultural knowledge with young people throughout the area. She gave workshops on agribusiness, goat and rabbit production, and environmental awareness.

Jacquiline is looking forward to learning more about agricultural economics and microfinance as tools to create opportunities for small farmers. “With my EARTH education I want to go and invent new production systems. My plan is to use science to implement methods of preventing disease in plants and animals.”
