Mauricio’s family lives in the rural area of San Marcos in the mountains of Ocotepeque, Honduras.
After graduating, Mauricio plans to return to his home and community. He likes coffee and coffee production, but sees the risk in depending on only one crop type. Everyone in his community grows coffee and last year many of the coffee crops were destroyed by a disease. When a tree is infected, there is nothing to do but cut it down and replant. When he returns, Mauricio wants “people to branch out and grow different crops. I’d like to start a few agricultural businesses to encourage crop variety.” Mauricio dreams of teaching classes at EARTH University and wants to continue studying in order to earn a doctorate. Once he is a professor, Mauricio would like to teach courses on tropical crops and natural resource management.
