Tariq comes from Kingston, the urban capital of Jamaica, and has been an advocate for agriculture and the environment since he was a boy. He participated actively in 4-H where he held many leadership positions, including vice president of the Jamaica 4-H Club.
Tariq knew he wanted to study agriculture, and chose to come to EARTH “because of the strong hands-on learning program as well as its emphasis on environmental issues.”
One of his goals after graduation is to help increase food security in Jamaica, and change the opinion that you cannot grow food in a crowded city like Kingston. Tariq explains, “You don’t need a big piece of land to grow food; every single person can grow something in their house with just a container and some soil. In the end, you have something to eat and share with your friends. I think if people started doing this, they would see how easy it is and how proud you feel when you eat something that you grew yourself.”
