Shewarega grew up in rural Ethiopia, where his father supports the family by working as a gardener. He was always an excellent student, but as Ethiopia only provides free education until 7th grade, Shewarega had to find a way to pay for high school. EEF Ethiopian Education Foundation funded his private boarding high school education at the School of Tomorrow, which is located in central Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Shewarega found out about EARTH from a speaker who came to his school. “They encouraged me to apply because of my volunteer and leadership experience.” He wants to improve many aspects of Ethiopian agriculture when he graduates from EARTH. “I would like to change the way Ethiopians do agriculture. I would try to introduce more sustainable methods and teaching programs so that I may teach the farmers how to do things like add value to their products.”
