Martinho is from the rural outskirts of Lusaka, the capital city of Zambia, and is the first person in his family to attend university and study abroad. Martinho comes to EARTH with years of experience in agriculture; growing up on a farm, Martinho turned to agriculture to keep himself busy and at age 10 started his own chicken farm, which in turn allowed him to purchase seeds and begin to grow crops for family consumption.
He says of his experience so far, “EARTH has outdone my expectations, it is so much more than what I read on the website. My life has always been about agriculture and I knew this is what I wanted to do. I wanted to come to EARTH because I need to practice things to understand them. I also knew that there are other students from all over Africa and I can make useful connections for later.”
