Lucia is from a rural community outside of Nairobi, Kenya. Her family belongs to the pastoralist Turkana tribe. Lucia has an identical twin sister and in her culture, twins are seen as an abnormality and traditionally one is killed at birth or sent away to live with a different family. Lucia was sent to live with her aunt in a different region of Kenya, and considers her adoption to be “lucky” because the people of her aunt’s region cultivate crops and Lucia had the opportunity to discover her love of agriculture.
Her passion for agriculture stems not only from her experience in the fields and in the markets, but also from witnessing the devastating effects of hunger. She recalls, “My twin sister, who is a mirror of me, almost starved to death waiting for relief food and it still haunts me to this day. I must do something to change this for the future of my community.”
She is excited to be at EARTH wants to learn absolutely everything that she can. “I know that this is the start of my mission of being an agent of change. I want to be the woman that makes a big difference.”
