Johana’s family lives on a small farm in a rural area outside La Unión, Colombia. Her interest in agronomy was fueled by her family’s participation in GLOBALG.A.P., a non-profit group dedicated to safe and sustainable production of food, flowers, and plants.

After graduating from EARTH University, Johana would “like to change the methods farms use and make agriculture more productive. It’s non-productivity that has led many people to abandon their fields. There is also an excessive use of agro-chemicals and farmers in my community only plant potatoes. When you only plant one crop type, plagues and diseases become resistant. The soil is depleted, because they don’t put back the nutrients they’ve leached from it. I want to make changes. I think the whole system has to change.”
