Gerson grew up in Morales, Guatemala. He went to live with his aunt and uncle in Zacapa, Guatemala in order to attend a secondary school with a focus on agriculture.
After he graduates from EARTH University, Gerson plans to return to Guatemala to help villages in both Morales and Zacapa. Villages in Morales focus on banana production and grow Ule trees for the rubber they contain. However, frequent flooding from the Motagua River devastates their crops, and Gerson wants to find not only a solution to flooding, but would also like to add crop diversity.
In Zacapa, he hopes to teach villages better ways to care for the land, animals, and water. He plans to teach small producers how to make their own fertilizers. He would also like to establish a waste management system to prevent villages from collecting and burning trash, which only further contributes to contamination.
