Alex is from the rural village of Nakaseke, about 70 miles outside Kampala. He will be the first in his family to attend university.

Alex is especially looking forward to the Entrepreneurial Projects Program at EARTH so that he can bring new technology and ideas back to the business he started in 2011. His company, Pig Production & Marketing Uganda Ltd., was inspired by “The women farmers in my village who would raise a few pigs to earn money for their families, but always had trouble finding a market. I began small, buying a few pigs here and there and building up my network of buyers. Today we have 150 pigs and we employ nine people, some full-time and some part-time. We also sponsor two elementary school kids in my village, we pay their tuition and uniforms to keep them in school.”

After being accepted to EARTH, Alex entrusted his friend and co-founder to manage the company in his absence. In the future, he plans to “I see my education as a huge opportunity: I plan to go back to Uganda and further develop my project and employ young people, which will reduce crime in my community.”
