Wilmer has enjoyed agriculture ever since he was a little boy growing up in a rural community in Jinotega, Nicaragua. The region is the center of coffee production in Nicaragua and Wilmer’s family is dedicated to coffee production.
Wilmer plans to go back to his community after graduation to help his family’s farm grow and become more productive. Touched by the generosity of The MasterCard Foundation, he hopes to open a technical school back in Nicaragua that will help people to receive an education they otherwise would not receive. He also plans to become a politician. Wilmer says people often ask him why he did not chose a different field if he wants to climb the political ladder. Wilmer explains that Nicaragua is a farming country and he believes “It is important for a politician to know his country, know the most important activities in order to run the country successfully. That’s why I think an agronomist would make a great politician.”
