Evelia’s family lives in Tlaltetela in the state of Veracruz, Mexico. Evelia had the opportunity to work in coffee production for a few years. During that time, she learned about the buying and selling process and how the “small coffee producers in my town sell to the middlemen for very little,” and in turn, the middlemen sell the coffee at three times its value.

Evelia hopes to return to her community to help those who most need it, especially the small producers. One area that she hopes to address is that of fertilizers. She has noticed that farmers at home will choose whatever fertilizer works for someone else, without realizing certain fertilizers work better with certain soil types. Evelia hopes to learn more about fertilizers in order to go home and help small producers learn the best and most efficient ways to grow their crops.
