Addisu is from Bule Hora, Ethiopia. His family produces coffee, and also grows corn, beans, and enset. He decided to focus on agriculture not only because of his parents’ farm, but also because a large majority of the population in Ethiopia are farmers. In the future, Addisu plans to introduce new farming methods back home in Ethiopia that could improve farming conditions. He is especially interested in coffee production since it is one of Ethiopia’s largest exports. Addisu also dreams of improving life in his community and country in ways unrelated to agriculture. “In Ethiopia there are so many orphans who have lost their families because of HIV/AIDS or other reasons, and they have the interest to learn but can’t go to school,” and Addisu wants to help them too.

Hajaratu, a first-year student, was born and raised in Accra, Ghana, but her family comes from the northern part of the country, Tamale.

Although she grew up in an urban setting, Hajaratu spent school vacations and other periods in her family’s home village where she participated in many agricultural activities.

She felt very compelled to do this, not only out of her own personal interest, but also because she found it was the best way to get to know the people, by working alongside them.

One of the main things that interested her about EARTH is the practical education, and she looks forward to one day returning to her country to share her knowledge, and to starting her own rural-based business.

Grégory, a second-year student, comes from Port-au-Prince, Haiti´s capital. He heard about the University through his sister, Stéphany, who graduated from EARTH in 2011.

The beauty of a small garden project she started at the family´s home sparked his imagination and made him curious about the school; he also admired her practical experience in and dedication to the communities surrounding the University as an example of ethical leadership.

Now at EARTH, he deeply values his training here. With it, he wants to offer his home community both cultural enrichment and agricultural knowledge.

In particular, he wants to educate the young people there, who he believes all have the potential to make positive change happen for the future of the country.

Although she came to EARTH to study agronomy, she has found that the degree offers so much more. Her studies here have not only nourished her interests in biodynamic farming, agro-ecology, and ecotourism but also taught her about connecting across differences.
