Conference on Sustainability and International Education
March 5 @ 8:00 am - March 9 @ 5:00 pm
Exchange knowledge and experiences about the current trends in international education and sustainability and contribute to building stronger study abroad programs for your students.
Studying, learning about and critically engaging with sustainability has been ´in fashion´ for quite some time in higher education programs around the world. Our universities work together with many international partners for a variety of strategic reasons, one of which is creating added value to their curricula by exposing students to different cultural realities through study abroad programs. The customized short-term international programs offered at EARTH University are based on this partnership model, promoting collaboration between universities, their faculty and students. Our overall objective is to provide students with transformative experiences that broaden their horizons and expand their environmental and social consciousness.
The Conference on Sustainability and International Education will explore the added value of international study programs in higher education; particularly related to the theme of sustainability. During the conference, participants will be exposed to activities and pedagogies that EARTH uses in its study abroad programs to strengthen student’s understanding of sustainability. We will look critically and collectively at issues such as the sustainability of our food production, our energy and global transportation, exploring the economic, social and environmental impact of such human activities. We will also consider and explore possible alternatives. These are real life cases that we use in teaching sustainability to raise student´s interest, critical engagement and alternative considerations with the intention of creating a profound and transformative learning experience.
The field trips and experiences with study abroad programs at EARTH that have been created and carried out in collaboration with partner universities will form the basis for discussions. Participants will be assigned roles as either moderator or reporter, thus guaranteeing active engagement and a lively conference. Most importantly, there will be many outdoor activities, during which EARTH professors and staff will be sharing what we do with international students when they are here participating in study abroad programs at the EARTH University campus, nearby enterprises and surrounding communities.
