In 2009, in the eastern region of Sierra Leona, a dream stirred on the rays of an African sunrise.
That year, without warning, the high school in Kono District Headquarters imposed school fees. The fees were far more than most students could afford, including Tamba Abdulai Konah. A shadow fell across the path of education that had once promised to lead the students towards a brighter future.
Despite their youth, Tamba Abdulai Konah and a few friends, created Koyandu Farm Development Association, an agricultural organization that bears the name of the community where it is located. Though the young adolescents lacked business and agricultural experience, each one felt a yearning to push back the shadow and raise the money the students needed to fund their educations. Fueled by his dream to complete high school, Tamba refused to give up.
Under a fiery Sierra Leona sun, Tamba and his friends dedicated their time to caring for the cassava farm. They became a lighthouse in their community, illuminating the path that would lead the youth back to their studies.
It was not long before the students drew the attention of those from a nearby village that offered to buy the farm. Tamba turned down their offer. Instead, he asked them to join Koyandu Farm Development Association in order to grow and harvest more to take to market in the city. They agreed. Soon, the organization was also growing rice and was raising enough money to finance the education of over 250 students, Tamba included.
The light did not stop at the edge of the fields. Tamba and the other leaders of the group contacted a non-governmental organization (NGO) that travelled out to the farm. The NGO built better roads to make transporting materials and harvests easier. Energy radiated from Tamba and Koyandu Farm Development Association, illuminating the once shadowed path of progress. Tamba held a position as the organization’s secretary through the completion of his studies, graduating with high marks and never once letting his light waver.
That is the power of a dream awakened on the rays of a Sierra Leonean sunrise. The energy to create change is also within you. Share it to help kindle the dreams of a brighter future by clicking here.
