Bert teaches Introduction to Natural Sciences to first year students. He is the coordinator of the Research Unit. Is the developer of the “Space Atlas of Costa Rica”, for which he received the Public Service Medal from NASA.
He is a member of the Association for Tropical Biology, the Mexican Entomological Society and the Alexander von Humbolt Foundation Society.
He is also the co-founder and vice-president of the Humboldt Association for Central America and the Caribbean. Before joining EARTH he was a researcher at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the Australian National University (ANU).
He is interested in the study and maintenance of biodiversity, medicinal plants, Chagas disease and the interpretation of space photography. He is also an expert in dung beetle ecology and biology. He received his Ph.D. from the Australian National University.
