– In response to the Central American economic, political and social crisis of the 1980s, a group of Costa Rican visionaries partnered with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the Costa Rican Government to establish EARTH University.

– Adoption of the Law for the creation of EARTH

1989

– Construction of the University begins.

– Appointment of first University President.

 

1990

 – On March 26, EARTH inaugurates its first class with 60 students.

1991

 

Celebration of the first “Open House” for the community, now known as the Tropical America Fair.

1992

 

-First commercial banana paper production

-Dr. Glen L. Taggart inaugurates the Permanent Education Program (PEP)

1993

–  EARTH graduates its first class of professionals in Agriculture Sciences and Natural Resource Management.


1994

 

-Celebration of the XV Central American Presidential Summit.

1995

 

-First Institutional Tree Planting Day, today known as Children of the Earth Day.

1996

 

-The first Latin American experiment on a space mission, the ChagaSpace, EARTH-NASA flight.

 

1997

 

-Inauguration of the José Elías Sanchez Integrated Organic Farm and its Rural Training Center.

 

1998

– EARTH initiates the five-year SEMCIT international seminar series (Sustainability, Education and the Management of Change in the Tropics), a project for the transformation of agricultural education in the tropics.

1999

 

-First reforestation project for carbon-fixation.

2000

 

-X Aniversary,  Visit the Nobel Peace Prize Mikhail Gorbachev.

 

2001

 

-Dedication of the W.K. Kellogg

2002

– Through a donation from the Ford Foundation, EARTH established the Academic Preparation Program designed especially for those young men and women who exhibit the qualities EARTH seeks, such as leadership and values, but who have not received a solid high school education and need to strengthen their basic academic skills before beginning their education at EARTH.

2003

 

-Recognition of EARTH and its contributions to innovations in the banana industry.

2004

 

– Oduber Elliot family donates La Flor Farm to EARTH University.

2005

–  EARTH’s reaches 1,000 alumni

–  The EARTH-La Flor, Daniel Oduber Q. Center opens in Guanacaste.


 

2006

 

-Graduation of the first group of participants in the  Open Classroom Program, a community outreach initiative.

2007

 

-EARTH presides over the V Global Conference of the Global Consortium for Higher Education and Research for Agriculture (GCHERA).

-EARTH University is declared the first carbon-neutral campus in Costa Rica.

-EARTH bestows its first Doctor in Humanities Honoris Causa degree to 2006 Nobel Prize Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus.

-Academic Program for third-year students at EARTH-La Flor begins

-Inauguration of PROMES (Promoting Sustainable Markets)

2010

– EARTH University celebrates its 20th anniversary
