Martin Burt

Martin Burt is a social entrepreneur and global leader. As Founder & CEO of Fundación Paraguaya, an NGO devoted to developing solutions to eliminate poverty, he has become a pioneer in microfinance, youth entrepreneurship, financial literacy and technical vocational methodologies in over 30 countries. He is co-founder of Teach a Man to Fish, an NGO based in London that promotes “education that pays for itself” and is Founder and CEO of Poverty Stoplight, a new poverty measurement and coaching tool that uses technology to allow families to self-diagnose and eliminate multidimensional poverty.

Dr. Burt is a member of the Board of Directors of the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship at the World Economic Forum and of the Global Foodbanking Network. He holds a PhD from Tulane University and is a Visiting Professor of Social Entrepreneurship at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Distinguished Visiting Professor at University of California, Irvine. As a public servant, he has served as Chief of Staff to the President of Paraguay, Mayor of Asunción, and Vice Minister of Commerce.

George attended Earlham College prior to serving in the infantry in Vietnam in 1969.
While there he received the Bronze Star for Valor. Following his tour in Vietnam, he attended Kalamazoo Valley Community College and Western Michigan University with a focus in the Sciences. While attending college he co-founded a commune and a company that produced belt buckles and ornamental castings. In 1981 George sold his interest in that company and joined Kalsec, Inc., a family business founded by his father in 1958. He worked his way through Kalsec in manufacturing becoming President in 1998, CEO & Chairman of the Board in 2007 and Executive Chairman in 2018. Kalsec is an international business in the food and beverage industry, manufacturing and selling natural colors, flavors, antioxidants, hop extracts and nutritional ingredients.

George has five international patents for processes and products that are produced using a unique spice extraction process. He was also instrumental in starting Kalsec’s agricultural division in west Texas, where rosemary, paprika, capsicum and carrot are grown, dehydrated and extracted.

George’s passions outside of work are sustainability, education and family planning. He was Chairman of the Board of the Kalamazoo Nature Center, Board Member of Pathfinder International (an international organization that works to improve reproductive health of adolescents, women and men throughout the developing world), and also served on the Board of Directors of First National Bank of Michigan. He is actively involved in supporting sustainable agriculture and education with Earth University in Costa Rica. George and his wife Clare have two daughters, three lovely granddaughters and live in an earth sheltered, passive solar home that they built in 1980. George enjoys reading and bicycling in his free time.
