From October 2-3, we welcomed more than 70 visitors for Illuminators Weekend as part of EARTH’s 25th Anniversary celebrations. The purpose of the visit was to thank our friends, donors and board members for their loyal support of the Institution for the last 25 years.

On Friday morning, the participants enjoyed a presentation about the University’s admission process and the academic model, plus a tour of campus with trips to the banana plantation, the Periurban Farm and the Renewable Energy Laboratory.

In the afternoon, the visitors met with students and attended a dedication ceremony for the new Admissions/International Academic Relations building, where student Liliana Armero (’15, Colombia) The MasterCard Foundation Scholar shared some words about the importance of the third-year internship.

At the end of the day, we held a Student Fair with presentations about various entrepreneurial projects and other University programs.

On Saturday, the group went to the Integrated Organic Farm and met local farmers who work with our students in the Community Experience module. In addition, the visitors planted trees in the new “25th Anniversary Forest” on campus.

A Night of Gratitude

On Saturday evening, our visitors first stopped at the Gold Museum to appreciate indigenous art and craftsmanship made by Costa Rica’s first inhabitants. They later joined more than 700 people from the EARTH community (local producers, staff, faculty and students) who attended an exclusive concert from the Costa Rican Philharmonic Orchestra at the National Theatre in downtown San José.

EARTH awarded special recognition to the U.S Agency for International Development (USAID), The MasterCard Foundation, the Kellogg Foundation and the Costa Rican Government for their support of the University.

The orchestra was directed by Maestro Marvin Araya and featured a variety of Latino pop music performed by Costa Rican artists Madera Nueva, Master Key and Marfil.
