Program in the Agricultural Sciences
Entrepreneurial Projects
EMP 101 – EMP 102 Entrepreneurial
Projects
Through a sequence of modules, this course enables
the student to develop the aptitude and an attitude for business,
by integrating the technical, economical, environmental, and social
aspects of business management. At the end of the sequence the student
is able to create an agro-food business that uses, in a sustainable
manner, the natural resources of the tropical region.
To achieve these objectives, the student participates
in the planning and application of feasibility studies, including
the business aspects of marketing, administration, budgeting, finances,
and social and environmental impacts. As an essential part of these
modules, the student uses an experiential learning focus whereby
he/she works with a team to organize a business, analyze and evaluate
problems, make decisions, carry out field work, and scrutinize the
performance of his/her agro-business.
This is a long-term course. The course begins in the second trimester
of the 1st year and concludes in the second trimester of the 3rd
year. Throughout the three years of the course, the student learns
piece by piece the information that is instrumental for the formation
of a successful business project. The modules serve as support and
training that supplements the work that the student is carrying
out in his/her entrepreneurial project.
Two hours of class per week plus the necessary
hours to complete all work related to the student’s project.
EMP 201 – EMP 203 Entrepreneurial
Projects
During the 2nd year students carry out previously
approved plans and investments. At the same time they participate
in a series of learning modules in which they develop the skills
necessary to successfully execute their projects. (For a general
description, see Entrepreneurial Projects, First Year).
Two hours of class per week, plus additional hours
as required to successfully carry out the project.
EMP 301 – EMP 302 Entrepreneurial
Projects
The students will finish their project during the
second trimester of the thrid year. The group members liquidate
the finances of their agro-business and share the results of their
endeavors with their classmates.
Two hours of class plus per week plus fieldwork during the first
trimester, and one hour of class per week during the second trimester.
