This campus is different because of its transformational role and because it is dedicated to the generation of innovative ideas aiming to promote development through an entrepreneurial spirit , social justice, technological innovation and the creation of alternatives to protect the environment.
Since the ex-president Daniel Oduber Quiros’ family’s donation of June 24, 2005, EARTH started to take actions such as the recovery and diversification of crops, infrastructure improvements and the harvesting and selling of mangos, sugarcane, citrus and cattle. EARTH has also made strategic alliances with local enterprises, municipalities and non governmental organizations with the goal of developing projects to improve the management of the Liberia River watershed, promoting waste management and to participate in the Regional Commission of the Guanacaste Conservation Area. Currently, the University is preparing to start construction of its academic campus, basic grain production and to develop clean energy initiatives in the region.
“The solution to the problems, and successful actions to confront the challenges of the Dry Tropics, must be full of innovation, entrepreneurship as well as of social and environmental responsibility. We want to make this campus a replicable and affordable example for our students, entrepreneurs, partners, scientists, professionals of diverse fields, and for our beneficiaries in the tropics, committed to contributing to the solution of real problems” pointed engineer and economist Carlos G. Murillo Martínez, Director of EARTH University La Flor.
EARTH defined 5 components that will guide the work on this new campus:
• Center for the Transformation of Knowledge: The main purpose of La Flor campus will be to search for ways to improve the environment, productivity and human capacities, as well as the generation of jobs through teaching and research.
• Sustainable Agricultural Center: It deals with all the agricultural production (mango, sugarcane, citris fruits, and cattle production) of the new campus, creating learning experiences for students, producers and visitors.
• Sustainable Technology Center: This project will manage not only academic activities but also coordinate research with companies that are oriented towards development and innovation and will be a scientific strategic place.
• Agro-eco-cultural Tourism: La Flor will be used a reference point for those who visit Guanacaste, offering activities that integrate, ecological, agricultural, scientific and cultural criteria.
•Green Conference Center: This will be a place where we will offer services and facilities to have business and academic activities. The center’s design will reflect a “green” way of thinking.
